Wildfire PreventionSmokey Bear

Georgia Forestry Commission professionals are active in promoting wildfire prevention to the public.

This has traditionally taken place in the form of Smokey Bear educational programs in schools, civic club gatherings and other public events such as fairs and expos.

However, recent statistics show that the adult population is responsible for more fires than children. GFC subsequently shifted our emphasis on wildfire prevention somewhat by taking fire prevention a step further and educating that segment of the population responsible for human caused fires.

The GFC has targeted Georgia counties experiencing the most wildfires with the goal of reducing the number of human caused fires in these counties. Most of these fires are caused by careless debris burning, which is the number one cause of wildfire in Georgia.
